Human Resources : teams
Staff are on duty 24 hours a day in the Mont Blanc Tunnel :
150 people are employed in safety roles in the tunnel, and the system is in a constant state of alert. At every hour of the day there are :
11 immediate response staff stationed at the centre of the tunnel and at the two entries
Immediate response teams are on permanent alert. These staff, who are seconded to the MBT-EEIG from GSA, are all professionals with high levels of training in tackling fires in confined spaces. They are provided with special double-cab response vehicles (given the name Janus), that have been specifically designed to drive through smoke.
3 traffic safety operators in charge of safety facilities
Traffic safety operators are supported by an automated assistance system to monitor traffic and control facilities, including the ventilation systems, emergency alarms, electronic information signs for drivers etc.
5 traffic safety staff
The traffic safety staff are in charge of customer safety. Should an incident arise, they are responsible for taking the initial action on the ground, alongside the immediate response teams. They are also in charge of escorts for abnormal loads.
2 toll managers and 6 traffic safety assistants
Toll managers and traffic safety assistants are on duty 24 hours a day to help direct emergency services and evacuate users in the event of an incident. They also manage the control areas.
Public service partners
The final element of the safety provisions is the binational police force and customs, who are responsible for enforcing the regulations on entry and driving in the Mont Blanc Tunnel.
In the event of a major incident, action will be led by French and Italian fire services from the two valleys who have a comprehensive knowledge of the tunnel and can coordinate personnel and guarantee an effective response.
